MAIDUGURI , Nigeria, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- At least 30 people died in Maiduguri, Nigeria, witnesses said, after two female suicide bombers exploded bombs at a crowded market.

A teenage girl exploded her bombs Monday, and as people hurried to attend to victims, the second girl's bombs detonated. Both were dressed in full hijab, covering their bodies and most of their faces. Although authorities have not confirmed the death toll, some sources claim 60 people died. Witnesses said the majority of the casualties came from the second bomb.

The city of Maiduguri, with a population of over a million, is the largest in northeastern Nigeria's Borno state, the former stronghold of the Islamist militant group Boko Haram, which aspires to establish a Muslim caliphate. Although it has been driven from the city, Boko Haram, involved in a violent rebellion against the Nigerian government, maintains a strong presence in surrounding towns.
