REYNOSA, Mexico, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- A pregnant American teen is expected to survive after being shot by Mexican police Tuesday in the border state of Tamaulipas when the truck she was in disobeyed orders to stop.

Indira Michelle Blanco Gomez, 14, and her fetus "are out of danger but remain under medical observation," the state Attorney General's Office said in a statement.

Authorities said they are investigating the officers who fired at the truck, which was being driven by a male friend of the teen.

According to the AG's office, three state police patrols approached the vehicle shortly before midnight Monday, near the international bridge that connects Reynosa, Mexico with Pharr, Texas.

The police "approached the couple and ordered them to stop, but the minor's friend ignored them and sought to flee at top speed."

Officers fired at the tires of the truck, forcing the driver to stop. They noticed the teen was wounded in the belly after taking the couple into custody, and took her to a hospital.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico said it was aware of reports that a U.S. citizen had been shot in Reynosa.
