RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- There are no plans to change the long-standing ban on women driving in Saudi Arabia despite a news organization's report to the contrary.

Al Jazeera reports Mohammed Abdullah Al-Muhanna, head of the Shura Council, which advises Saudi Arabia's king, told local media outlets a report by the Associated Press was "misinformed."

The AP report, based on an anonymous source, indicated the 150-member council had suggested women over 30 should be allowed to drive, but with numerous restrictions.

The restrictions included times and places that women would be able to drive, what they could and could not wear and specified that a woman would need permission of a male relative to get behind the wheel.

Saudi media quoted Al-Muhanna as saying the AP report showed a "lack of authenticity."

Some female activists been defying the Saudi ban and using social media to post images of themselves driving.

According to Al Jazeera, Saudi Arabia does not have a written law barring women from driving, only fatwas, or religious edicts, by senior clerics.
