KIEV, Ukraine, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Pro-Western parties and politicians dominated Ukraine's parliamentary elections Sunday.

The election, seen by many as a referendum on President Petro Poroshenko's mandate, will determine the composition of the new government.

Poroshenko's bloc was the clear winner, followed by Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk's People's Front. Both parties are pro-European and support further Ukranian integration with the European Union.

Almos 5 million people in embattled regions were unable to participate in the vote. Crimea, annexed by Russia in March, and parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, currently embroiled in a civil war between the Ukrainian government and pro-Russian separatists, are not under government control.

The areas controlled by separatists will hold a separate election next month.
