LONDON, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- British citizen Haroon Rashid Aswat, once considered Abu Hamza's deputy and alleged to have conspired to establish a terrorist training camp in Oregon, was extradited to the U.S. on Tuesday to face terror charges.
Aswat, who has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, was removed from Broadmoor Hospital in the United Kingdom and taken to a British airport on Tuesday, where he was met by U.S. authorities and flown to New York.
Aswat was arrested in the U.K. in 2005 at the request of U.S. authorities but his extradition was delayed due to concerns about his mental health.
The European Court of Human Rights ruled in 2013 that extradition could contribute to a deterioration in his mental health. That decision was overturned by two High Court judges in September, who concluded Aswat would receive satisfactory medical care in the U.S.
Aswat has maintained his innocence.
