HONG KONG, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Hong Kong police and pro-democracy demonstrators clashed into the night despite officials offering Saturday to talk with the protesters Tuesday.

A rise in violence Saturday saw thousands of protesters regain territory in the Mong Kok neighborhood. Saturday evening, Carrie Lam, Hong Kong's chief secretary, announced the government would hold talks with protesters on Tuesday.

But the student-led protesters clashed with police overnight and into Sunday despite the announcement.

The offer of talks comes a week after the government pulled out of another planned dialogue with the Hong Kong Federation of Students.

The Tuesday meeting will last two hours and is expected to be broadcast live. Nonetheless, Lam said any proposal for changing election law must comport with Chinese law, which since an August ruling, would only allow Hong Kong residents to vote for a chief executive nominated by committee.

The youth-led protests have continued for nearly three weeks, with thousands of demonstrators occupying government buildings and setting up camp in Hong Kong's Admiralty district.
