NEW YORK, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani declined to intervene in the legal case against an American reporter detained in Tehran in July. Jason Rezaian of the Washington Post and his wife, journalist Yeganeh Salehi, were arrested July 22. No charges have been announced.

Rouhani, addressing questions in New York at a presentation sponsored by the New America Foundation Wednesday, said, "The individual who you name is being investigated. He is in detention being investigated. During this time a multitude of things can change. At a time when a file, a case, is being built and the prosecutor is working hard to send that case file to the appropriate court," he would not address the charges.

Rouhani added charges would be announced if and when the case was brought before a court, and when questioned further, Rouhani made no suggestion he would intercede on Rezaian's behalf.
