LA PAZ, Mexico, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Hurricane Odile strengthened to a Category 4 as it makes its way close to land in Baja California Sur, Mexico, on Sunday.

The hurricane isn't expected to make direct landfall, but will get close enough to the southern tip of Baja California to cause life-threatening conditions, Accuweather.com reported.

Odile is packing maximum sustained winds of 135 mph with gusts up to 160 mph, and is expected to drop 4 to 8 inches of rain Sunday night into Monday morning.

"Given Cabo San Lucas's location on the southern tip of Baja California, risks will not only be confined to flooding rain and damaging wind, but a several foot storm surge will also cause significant coastal flooding," said meteorologist Richard Jaworski.

As the hurricane moves farther north into colder waters, it is expected to weaken.
