DAMASCUS, Syria, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Kidnapped U.S. journalist Peter Curtis was handed over to U.N. representatives Sunday in Syria, nearly two years after he was abducted by Islamist rebels.
Curtis was captured in October 2012 in Antakya, Turkey, by Islamist rebels as he prepared to enter Syria.

It was unclear what rebel group held the Boston native captive, though it's possible multiple groups passed him around.
The terms of release, negotiated by representatives in Qatar, were also unclear.
Footage of Curtis was released June 30, showing him with long hair and a beard, and appearing to be in good health.
