Rocket fire breaks latest Gaza truce

JERUSALEM, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Three rockets were fired into southern Israel from Gaza Tuesday, the Israeli military said, interrupting the latest cease-fire agreement.

The projectiles landed in open ground, causing no damage or injuries, between the cities of Beersheba and Netivot, several hours before the 24-hour cease-fire was scheduled to expire. A statement from the Israel Defense Force said it would respond by "targeting terror sites across the Gaza Strip."

Although it was not clear if Hamas -- Gaza's dominant political and military organization -- or another, smaller militia group was responsible for the rocket fire, Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said, "Today's rocket attack on Beersheba is a grave and direct violation of the cease-fire to which Hamas committed itself. This is the 11th cease-fire that Hamas has either rejected or violated."

Negotiations continue in Cairo, Egypt, to find a solution to the conflict, in which over 1,900 Palestinians and 64 Israeli soldiers have been killed.
