PARIS, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- A Saudi prince's motorcade was ambushed in Paris Sunday evening by armed robbers who made off with more than $300,000.
Eight assailants, armed with Kalashnikovs, attacked the convoy and drove along Boulevard Périphérique to Le Bourget airport. The armed men traveling in two cars forced the diplomatic convoy to stop around 9:00 p.m.
The robbers took $334,775 and papers being transported by the convoy that were described as "sensitive documents" belonging to the Saudi embassy.
They then hijacked one of the diplomatic vehicles, a Mercedes van, and briefly took three of the Saudi occupants hostage before releasing them and abandoning the van. The Mercedes was located later and had been torched.
An investigation is underway. French police declined to identify the Saudi prince, and the Saudi embassy is not commenting on the attack.
A police source told Le Monde, "Clearly [the robbers] were informed, but it's still quite a rare type of attack."
