MADRID, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- The Spanish priest with Ebola who was evacuated from Liberia to Madrid died Tuesday morning after reportedly receiving an experimental drug treatment.
Father Miguel Pajares arrived at Madrid's Carlos III Hospital Thursday to an isolated unit via a Spanish Air Force medical jet. On Saturday, the hospital reported that Pajares was being treated with ZMapp, the experimental drug also being used to treat two Americans in Atlanta, Georgia.
The hospital was giving regular updates on the priest's condition until he requested them to stop. The state news agency EFE reported a drop in his vital signs shortly before his death. The two Americans who received the experimental treatment are reportedly showing improvement.
The World Health Organization has approved the ethical use of ZMapp, and the U.S. government has put health workers in Liberia in contact with the maker of the drug. Shipments have been made to the country free of charge.
