Police suspect he may have been killed by a gang.

The Jalisco New Generation drug cartel is active in the area.

Torres' death comes more than a month after Ayutla's deputy police chief was killed. No arrests have yet been made in that case.

According to the Mexican Local Government Association, their murders are the most recent in a string of 50 unsolved homicide cases targeting local leaders since 2007.
