NEW YORK, July 25 (UPI) -- The International Civil Aviation Organization announced Friday it will hold a high-level meeting in Montreal on July 29 to discuss the risks posed to civilian aircraft flying over conflict zones.
The ICAO explained in a statement Friday that the meeting is being held in response to the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, which was shot down over restive eastern Ukraine by a surface-to-air missile on July 17.
"This meeting will discuss the appropriate actions to be pursued in order to more effectively mitigate potential risks to civil aviation arising from conflict zones."
The Directors General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Airports Council International (ACI) and the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO) are expected to participate.
