Malaysia Airlines updates partial passenger manifest list

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, July 18 (UPI) -- Malaysia Airlines released an updated, yet still partial, passenger manifest list on Friday afternoon for Flight 17, which was shot down by a surface-to-air missile over eastern Ukraine a day earlier.

The 283 passengers and 15 crew members aboard are presumed dead. Many bodies were found at the crash site in Donetsk.

"Malaysia Airlines can confirm that a further 16 passengers' nationalities have been verified," the airline said in a statement, and that it is working to identify the nationalities of four passengers. The original passenger manifest stated there were 295 people on the plane, a figure that was amended to include three infants.

U.S. officials announced Friday that one Dutch passenger, Quinn Lucas Schansman, was also a U.S. citizen.

Malaysia Airlines has not yet released a list of the identities of the people aboard Flight 17, although some names have come to light via social media as families and friends grieve the lost.

During President Barack Obama's public address on Friday, he acknowledged a group of approximately 100 people aboard the flight were headed to an International AIDS Conference in Melbourne, Australia.

World Health Organization media special Glenn Thomas was also on the plane, the organization noted.
