BERLIN, July 9 (UPI) -- German authorities are investigating another government employee suspected of committing espionage, marking the second such case in a week.
A federal prosecutor in Karlsruhe announced Wednesday the home and office of a defense ministry employee had been searched. The defense ministry confirmed an investigation was underway but declined to offer details.
Die Welt newspaper reported the suspect is a German soldier.
Although the German government has not said which country the defense ministry was allegedly spying for, German media has described the investigation as a "U.S. spy" case.
Last week, the German federal prosecutor's office announced the arrest of an employee of the German intelligence agency, BND, for spying on behalf of the U.S.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel commented Monday on the BND officer's arrest: "If the allegations are true it would be a clear contradiction as to what I consider to be trusting co-operation between agencies and partners."
