Freed Sudanese Christian woman charged with 2 new counts; family in jail

KHARTOUM, Sudan, June 25 (UPI) -- Meriam Yehya Ibrahim, the Sudanese Christian woman sentenced to death for apostasy who was freed Monday and then detained at the airport, faces two new charges.

According to her legal team, Ibrahim has been accused of traveling with falsified documents and giving false information.

She and her American citizen husband, and their two young children, are being held without bail at a police station in Khartoum. Officials have accused her husband, Daniel Wani, of being an accessory.

They were detained Monday at the airport because of an "alleged irregularity with her documentation" as the family attempted to fly to the U.S. hours after her release from prison, where she had been sentenced to death for apostasy.

There appears to be some confusion regarding her travel status. On Tuesday, U.S. Department of State deputy spokesperson Marie Harf said "They were temporarily detained for several hours over questions related to their documents" but that the Sudanese government reported Ibrahim and her family had been released.

The State Department, Harf noted on Tuesday, was helping ensure the family's safe passage to the U.S.
