Foreign ministers from EU and League of Arab States gather in Athens

The European Union and League of Arab States held its third ministerial meeting in Athens on Tuesday and Wednesday to strengthen their cooperation on a range of geo-political issues.

ATHENS, Greece, June 11 (UPI) -- Foreign ministers from the European Union and the League of Arab States came together for a two-day summit in Athens to discuss a range of geo-political issues.

The third ministerial opened on Tuesday with EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Catherine Ashton and Moroccan Foreign Minister Salahedine Mezouar serving as co-chairs.

Ashton summarized the purpose of the meeting in a statement delivered Wednesday:

"This meeting has been about developing and strengthening the cooperation between the European Union and the League of Arab States. ... this has been about ensuring that we develop a more strategic relationship using the resources we have, to work together on all of the different issues that we face."

At the conclusion of the gathering, the EU and League of Arab States presented a declaration in which they promised further cooperation on issues of governance, political developments, humanitarian assistance, counter terrorism initiatives, and support to Mideast peace processes.
