BANGKOK, June 10 (UPI) -- Miss Universe Thailand announced Monday she would relinquish her crown and title following backlash over remarks she made regarding Thailand's "red shirt" pro-government movement.

Shortly after Weluree "Fai" Ditsayabut, 22, was crowned Miss Universe Thailand, comments she had posted online against supporters of the country's now deposed Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra came to light. In her posts, she called the demonstrators "dirty," "evil activists" who "should all be executed."

The beauty queen issued a televised apology on May 19, claiming she was "careless. I was young. I did it recklessly," and promising "It won't happen again."

On Monday, Weluree explained to reporters in Bangkok her reason for stepping down. "I felt under pressure. I tried to improve myself but what I could not stand was to see my mother stressed."
