BANGKOK, June 3 (UPI) -- Protesters against the military coup in Thailand have started using the three-fingered salute from The Hunger Games series to show their defiance.

It began with a small group of protesters in Bangkok who began to use the signal as their own sign of rebellion. Amateur video shows how the signal quickly spread through the city.

Some Thai newspapers are reporting that the three fingers stand for liberty, equality, and brotherhood, which were the principles of the French Revolution. People hold them up as they call for democratic elections. The military has been in charge since the coup on May 22. Former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is held in custody by the junta, along with several political activists.

The military has banned gatherings of five people or more, along with protests of any kind. Since the salute has become popular, they have also deemed it a protest and said they will start arresting people who use it.
