ROME , May 30 (UPI) -- The cruise ship Costa Concordia, which capsized in 2012 off the coast of Italy, will be refloated beginning July 20.

On Friday the Italian business newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore revealed the date the abandoned ship will be removed. It added the ship will be scrapped in the port city of Genoa later this year. There were several other ports, elsewhere in Europe, bidding for the contract to scrap the ship.

The stricken ship will be towed from its present position near the coastal island of Giglio to Genoa, a distance of about 280 kilometers (170 miles).

The Costa Concordia capsized after striking rocks near Giglio, killing 32 people. The manslaughter trial of its captain, Francesco Schettino, began last July. The ship was moved into an upright position in September 2013 in what some estimate as the biggest and most expensive salvage operation of its kind.
