South Korea hospital fire kills 20 patients, 1 nurse

Most of the dead were reportedly elderly patients in their 70s and 80s.

JANGSEONG , South Korea, May 27 (UPI) -- A fire broke out at Hyosarang Hospital in Jangseong County, South Korea on Wednesday, killing at least 21 people and injuring seven others.

Officials said that 20 elderly patients were killed, as well as a nurse on night duty. Most of the hospital patients were in their 70s and 80s.


A fire official said it took 30 minutes for emergency crews to put out the fire, which is thought to have started on the second floor of the two-story building. They said that most of the victims died from poisonous smoke inhalation.

The tragedy comes just two days after a seven people died in afire at a bus terminal in Goyang, a city northwest of Seoul.
