OTTAWA , May 15 (UPI) -- A Canadian court upheld a decision to extradite a suspected bomber of a Paris synagogue to France.
French authorities allege Dr. Hassan Diab, 60, a sociology professor at Canada's Carlton University and the University of Ottawa, was a Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine member when it planted a bomb outside Paris' Copernic Street Synagogue in 1980. The blast killed four people and injured more than 40 others.
Diab, a Canadian citizen of Lebanese descent, has denied a role in the incident. He was arrested in 2008 at the request of the French government.
He was committed for extradition in 2011 despite an acknowledgement by the presiding judge that the case was weak. The Ontario Court of Appeal this week upheld the judge's decision, noting the judge and the federal justice minister who signed the extradition order made no legal errors in coming to the decision.
