Ukrainian foreign ministry: OSCE monitors may have been abducted in eastern Ukraine

The Ukrainian foreign ministry said Friday that communication has been lost with OSCE military monitors in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, and that the members may have been abducted by "terrorists."

KIEV, Ukraine, April 25 (UPI) -- Military monitors working for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe mission in eastern Ukraine have lost contact, and may have been abducted, the Ukrainian foreign ministry said Friday.

During a briefing on Friday, the ministry's information policy department director Yevhen Perebyinis announced:

"In Donetsk region communication has been lost with members of the OSCE military verification mission ... According to preliminary reports, they could be captured by terrorists."

On Thursday, OSCE published an update from monitors in Donetsk region, stating that "The overall security situation ... remained tense. Occupation of state institutions was ongoing throughout the region."
