NAIROBI, Kenya, April 17 (UPI) -- A minibus collided with a truck carrying iron rods Friday near Nairobi, Kenya, killing 11 occupants of the bus.
A twelfth person on the bus, which is called a matatu in Kenya, survived.
The bus was struck head-on and dragged for about 40 meters (131 feet) before it was shoved into a roadside embankment. All the victims were found within the bus.
“The lorry (truck) was loaded with twisted iron rods that made its momentum dangerous. When it lost control and swerved and hit the matatu. All the victims had multiple fractures and rescuers had a difficult time pulling the two vehicles apart,” said Koibatek Sub-County Commissioner Samson Irungu.
The truck had three people in its cab, two of whom, the driver and the turn boy (a passenger who advises the driver in sharp turns) fled immediately after the accident. A manhunt for the two was begun immediately, Koibatek Police Commander Bernard Kibe.
