HOMS, Syria, April 11 (UPI) -- Two car bombs exploded in the government-controlled city of Homs raising the death toll in the last 2 days to at least 72 people, plus hundreds injured.
The first car bomb detonated on Friday killing 25 people and injuring 100 followed by a second that exploded half an hour later 100 yards away.
The explosions come hours after the government seized control of a town in the Haramun region near the Lebanon border.
These deaths are the latest in a trend of consistently escalating violence that included the killing of a Jesuit priest in Homs and 6 children killed in a round of mortar shelling in Damascus earlier this month.
In addition to the violence, millions of refugees are fleeing the country putting strains on countries including Jordan and Lebanon. The U.N. and the U.S. have been criticized for not sending promised aid to opposition groups as the Assad regime gains the upper hand over rebels in one of the bloodiest civil wars in recent history.
