Turkish man kills 6 former workers before committing suicide

KARS, Turkey, March 19 (UPI) -- A Turkish man allegedly fatally shot six of his former coworkers at the Turkish Statistics Institute before committing suicide on Wednesday, officials said.

The incident happened Wednesday morning at the institute's office in the northeastern province of Kars, the Cihan News Agency reported.

Authorities said Veysel Ergin, who used to work as a psychologist at the office, walked into the office, shot and killed six ex-colleagues, then killed himself. Another person was also injured in the attack.

"The attacker has been identified as Veysi Ergin, who used to work as a sociologist at the TurkStat office in Kars. He killed six people and committed suicide straight after," Kars Gov. Eyup Tepe said in a statement.

The KARS-Dogan news agency reported Ergin was dismissed from his job following an internal investigation at the institute.

"He is said to have had some psychological problems. He recently traveled to Diyarbakırand [and] brought a gun from there," Republican People's Party's mayoral candidate Naif Alibeyoglu told Hurriyet Daily News.
