Protesters occupy Taiwanese legislative chambers

TAIPEI, Taiwan, March 19 (UPI) -- Hundreds of people Wednesday packed the Taiwanese Legislative Yuan's main chamber to protest a service trade pact with China, officials said.

The occupation of the chamber, which began Tuesday night, prompted authorities to cancel all scheduled meetings of the Legislature's eight committees Wednesday amid concerns for lawmakers' safety, the Central News Agency reported.

It was unclear whether police would attempt to clear the building of protesters; they made two unsuccessful attempts to do so earlier Wednesday.

Meanwhile, opposition politicians, including Su Tseng-chang, chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party, showed up to give support to the protesters and deter any extreme action on the part of police, Wantchinatimes.com reported.

Protesters said they plan to occupy the chamber until Friday, when the Legislative Yuan is scheduled to hold its next floor meeting.
