Malaysia's Defense Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said in a press conference that Malaysia, in coordination with other countries, will be expanding the search area for missing Malaysia Airlines flight 370.
Hussein said that based on new data, Australia and Indonesia will take the lead in the southern corridor. In the northern corridor, China and Kazakhstan will lead in the areas closest to their respective countries.
"In the northern corridor, we have divided the search area into 7 quadrants." Hussein detailed, "Each of the seven quadrants is 400 nautical miles by 400 nautical miles or 160,000 square nautical miles in total. We have also divided the southern corridor into 7 quadrants. The entire search are is now 2.24 million square nautical miles. This is an enormous search area and it is one Malaysia cannot possibly search on its own."
25 countries are now involved in the search for the plane that vanished after communication with air traffic control was disabled.
