Khalid Sheikh Mohammed filed a statement saying that Osama Bin Laden's son-in-law Sulaiman Abu Ghaith was not involved in planning or execution of any terrorist attacks.
Abu Ghaith is on trial in New York and prosecutors allege that while he was not involved in the 9/11 attacks, he did have knowledge of other attacks such as the failed shoe bombing plot. Mohammed says that while Abu Ghaith was a spellbinding spokesman for Al-Qaeda, he did not have any involvement in attacks.
"Those tasked with giving statements to the media do not necessarily know all the details of an operation and are sometimes unaware of the very existence of the operation." Mohammed said in his statement.
He said that in addition to the lack of knowledge about operations, he also says that he never saw Abu Ghaith have anyone swear allegiance to Bin Laden.
"Swearing bayat does not mean that a person is placed on a list to carry out an operation; even the cook has sworn bayat."
It is undetermined how much Mohammed's testimony will help Abu Ghaith. The prosecution rested its case Friday and the defense will begin presenting their case Monday.
