PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria, March 15 (UPI) -- As many as 12 people were killed Saturday in a stampede that began when more than 20,000 job seekers attempted to enter a Nigerian stadium, officials said.

Two of the dead were pregnant women, the online Nigerian newspaper DailyPost reported.

The crowd was trying to get into the National Stadium in Port Harcourt to take an aptitude test. The test was announced only two days ago.

A man who identified himself only as Mr. John told the DailyPost that he and others who came to the stadium were deceiving themselves since only a handful would get jobs while everyone was required to pay processing fees.

''We are all fooling ourselves by coming here to choke ourselves to death," he said. "You will agree with me that those who will be employed at the end of the day never really came for the examination. It's sad and it's unfortunate that some us have to face this in this very unfortunate country.''

Unemployment is believed to run as high as 70 percent among young people in Nigeria.
