NAIROBI, Kenya, March 8 (UPI) -- Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said that he and his cabinet will be taking pay cuts as part of an austerity package to reduce the government wages.
Kenyatta said Friday that he and his deputies will be taking a 20 percent cut, while cabinet members and principal secretaries have agreed to reduce their pay by 10 percent, Voice of America reported.
The president and Deputy President William Ruto currently make over $150,000 per year, while cabinet secretaries make $110,000 per year.
Kenyatta also announced a new international travel policy to cut back on trips by government officials, Zegabi, a journal specializing in East African news, reported.
"Prudent governance structures and rules will be enforced; wastage in my government will be significantly reduced," Kenyatta said.
