UN deputy secretary-general meets with Ukrainian president

United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson commended Ukrainian President Oleksandr Turchynov's interim government for its "measured response to unfolding events" during a one-on-one meeting in Kiev on Tuesday.

March 4 (UPI) -- Acting Ukrainian President Oleksandr Turchynov met Tuesday with United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson in Kiev.

According to the UN, Eliasson emphasized the necessity for a diplomatic solution to the crisis following Russian's occupation of the Crimean Peninsula, and noted the international community's efforts to support Ukraine's territorial integrity as it seeks a peaceful resolution.

The UN senior official also commended Turchynov on his interim government's "measured response to unfolding events."
