Syrian government forces kill 175 rebels in Damascus

DAMASCUS, Syria, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Syrian forces loyal to President Bashar Assad have killed 175 rebels in southern Damascus, military officials said.

CNN, citing reports from the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency, said the raids took place south of the capital, and targeted Muslim extremists from Qatar, Chechnya and Saudi Arabia who had traveled to Syria to fight in the country's three-year civil war.

Rebel forces could not be reached to comment on the government's claims.

SANA also said raids were carried out in Aleppo and Homs against "terrorist" forces -- elements of which have been linked to al-Qaida -- killing several individuals and seizing bomb-making material and other weapons.
