Md. murder suspect killed in Israeli shootout

JERUSALEM, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- A Maryland murder suspect was shot and killed Sunday in a gun fight with Israeli prison guards, officials said.

Samuel Sheinbein, 34, opened fire on guards inside the Rimonim Prison in central Israel, officials said, but it wasn't clear if he had taken the weapon from a guard or had it smuggled inside. At least three guards were injured, one critically, the Washington Post reported.

Sheinbein was 17 years old in 1997. He and a friend killed Alfredo Enrique Tello Jr., whose burned and dismembered body was found wrapped in trash bags inside a garage in the Wheaton, Md., area, the Post said.

Sheinbein fled to Israel. Eventually he pleaded guilty there to charges related to the Maryland case and was sentenced to 24 years behind bars in an Israeli prison.
