Remains found on Italian hill are World War II British soldiers

ROME, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Remains discovered on a hillside in southern Italy have been identified as those of two British soldiers who died in World War II, officials say.

The men are believed to have died in late 1943 in an attack by German soldiers, the Italians news agency ANSA reported Thursday.

The remains, identified by British munitions found close by, were found in Salerno province by volunteers of the "Salerno 1943" association.

British forces took control of the site, which they identified as "Hill 270," on Sept. 22, 1943. The hill was taken over by German soldiers a short time later following an attack.

The Germans are believed to have buried the British soldiers.
