Prostitution crackdown in China detains 501 people

BEIJING, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Chinese police detained 501 suspects in a nationwide crackdown on prostitution, the Ministry of Public Security announced Monday.

More than 1,300 cases of organizing, luring or introducing sex services were uncovered by police, and 2,410 pornography dealers had their business closed by police, the ministry said.

The crackdown came after a television documentary, broadcast Feb. 9 on China Central Television, revealed hotels in the resort city of Dongguan were offering sex services, the Chinese news agency Xinhua said, noting the sex trade is illegal in China.
