Thailand police break up protest sites in Bangkok

BANGKOK, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- Police in Bangkok Friday shut down anti-government protest sites throughout the city, officials said.

The riot officers were sent to Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra's offices, as well as near the interior and energy ministries and a government complex to the north of the city center, to break up camps of demonstrators who began gathering to protest the government three months ago, the Financial Times reported.

Protesters did not resist removal, although police were previously holding back from confronting them for fear of inflaming the situation. There were no reports of arrests.

Following the police action, protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban was seen in deep conversation with fellow organizers.
