Russia limiting adoptions from countries where gay marriage is legal

MOSCOW, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- The Russian government announced a measure Thursday limiting adoption by people in countries that recognize same-sex marriages.

Adoptions by married same-sex couples and all unmarried couples in countries that recognize same-sex marriages are now prohibited by the Russian government, RIA Novosti reported.

"Adoptions can be carried out by members of either sex with the exception of ... people in a union of two people of the same sex that has been registered as a married [couple] according to the legislation of their country ... and also unmarried people in such countries," said the decree signed by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

The move comes several months after the adoption of a law signed by President Vladimir Putin banning the adoption of Russian children by same-sex couples.

Same-sex marriages are currently legal in France, Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden, Portugal, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa.
