Canadian doctor's terror trial under way

OTTAWA, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- A terrorism trial began Monday for an Ontario doctor and former "Canadian Idol" castoff accused of plotting bombings with an al-Qaida-affiliated group.

Khurran Syed Sher, who has been free on bail, was in Ontario Superior Court for the start of his terror trial, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Prosecutors allege Sher, along with two unnamed co-conspirators who will be tried separately, were in the process of manufacturing explosives to be detonated at unknown locations. Among the items seized were 50 circuit boards and a bomb-making manual, police said.

Investigators said they found the bomb-making supplies in an Ottawa townhouse.

Sher was working as a pathologist in London, Ontario, at the time of his arrest in August 2010. He once appeared on the singing competition "Canadian Idol" where he spoke in a fake Pakistani accent and sang an Avril Lavigne song during his audition.
