Bangladeshi couple charged in deadly garment factory fire denied bail

DHAKA, Bangladesh, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- A Bangladeshi couple charged in a fire at their clothing factory that killed at least 110 workers were denied bail Sunday.

Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Tazul Islam denied Tazreen Fashions Managing Director Delwar Hossain and company Chairwoman Mahmuda Akter Mita's request for bail pending their trial and ordered them to jail, the Dhaka Tribune reported.

Hossain and Mita had surrendered to authorities earlier in the day.

The couple are among 13 people charged in the November 2012 conflagration. Prosecutors told the newspaper the defendants are accused of not allowing workers to get out of burning factory and telling them the fire alarm that went off was part of "drill procedures." The prosecution is expected to call 104 witnesses at trial.
