American traveler goes missing in dangerous area of Mexico

MORELIA, Mexico, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- An American man on a motorcycle journey from the United States to Latin America is missing in Mexico, his family said.

Harry Devert, 32, who left a job in New York as a trader in finance to travel, has not been in touch with his girlfriend or mother since Jan. 25, CNN reported.

His last text to his girlfriend, Sarah Ashley Schiear, said he had been escorted through a dangerous area.

"Apparently there's another military escort waiting for me in some other town...I'm running way late because of the crazy military stuff ... hopefully get a chance to talk to you tonight when I (hopefully) finally arrive," the text stated.

He had checked out of a bed and breakfast in the state of Michoacan and had planned to travel to a beach on the Pacific coast when he vanished.

Devert's mother, Ann, said she had contacted both the American and French embassies in Mexico.

"The wheels of diplomatic work sometimes grind slowly," she said. "They are on top of things as much as they can be."

A U.S. State Department representative confirmed Saturday a U.S. citizen was missing in Michoacan, but a name and further information were not released.
