Two women killed as train derails in mountains of southern France

DIGNE-LES-BAINS, France, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- A train derailed Saturday after striking a large boulder in the Alps of southern France, killing two women and injuring many others, authorities said.

The tourist train runs between Nice on the Riviera and Digne-les-Bains, departmental capital of Alpes-des-Hautes-Provence, Radio France Internationale reported.

Investigators said the derailment was caused by a rock that had fallen to the track.

One of the dead women was described as a Russian national and the other as a local resident.

Authorities said at least one of the injured was in serious condition. The engineer was among those hurt.

Heavy snow in the area between Annot and Ste. Benoit hampered rescue efforts, officials said.
