Six die in Chinese fishing boat fire off coast of Japan

FUKUOKA, Japan, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Six people died when a Chinese fishing boat caught fire off the coast of Japan, the Chinese Consulate General in Fukuoka, Japan, said Friday.

Two others were injured, one severely, the consulate said.

The incident occurred 280 kilometers (173 miles) northwest of Kagoshima Prefecture's Amami Island, in the East China Sea near Okinawa.

A consular official said 24 crew members were aboard the boat, and one of the injured was transferred to another boat after the fire.

The boat is able to continue sailing, and will return to China with the bodies of the victims, the official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.

No cause for the fire was given.
