ATHENS, Greece, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Greek officials declared Cephalonia a natural disaster zone after it was struck by two earthquakes and dozens of aftershocks.
A 5.7-magnitude earthquake rumbled in the island Monday as crews from the Technical Chamber of Greece and the Ministry of Infrastructure were assessing damage from the Jan. 26 5.8-magnitude earthquake and aftershocks, Ekathimerini.com reported Tuesday.
On Sunday, about 1,800 buildings had been inspected and 750 were categorized as dangerous, Public Works General Secretary Stratos Simopoulos told EKathimerini.
"We will now have to inspect every building all over again, even those given the green light," Simopoulos said.
He said Monday's quake worsened conditions at the port of Lixouri and would be inspected by experts in port construction as well as underwater divers from the military.
The Infrastructure Ministry said it would provide residents unable to live in their homes with temporary housing to shelter them from low temperatures and rain. Ekathimerini.com said the government, religious organizations and civic groups also were providing food and other assistance to those whose homes were deemed uninhabitable.
