Swedish courthouse evacuated after suspicious package found

MALMO, Sweden, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- An appeals court in the city of Malmo, Sweden, was evacuated over a possible bomb threat Monday, officials said.

Workers in the courthouse's mail room found a suspicious package Monday morning and alerted police, the Swedish news agency TT reported.

"They reacted to the parcel and called the police," Skane County police spokeswoman Marie Persson said.

The courthouse was evacuated, as well as a nearby high school, as a precaution.

Persson said: "As far as we know, there aren't any known threats against the court of appeal."

Courthouse employees were allowed to re-enter the building by 11:30 a.m.

Police said the package contained a USB memory stick.

Earlier Monday, a blast occurred in another Malmo courthouse at about 3 a.m., the TT news agency reported.

The blast caused damage to the building's facade and blew out several windows.

Skane County police spokesman Hans Nilsson told TT police were unaware of any threats against the courthouse.

"We don't have any concrete threats, but we have active operations targeting criminal networks through the Olivia project," Nilsson said, referring to Operation Olivia, a police effort to target organized crime and increase safety in Malmo.
