Trial of deposed Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi begins in Cairo

CAIRO, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi and 14 others turned their backs on judges at the start of their trial in Cairo Saturday, officials said.

Morsi and the others face charges of inciting the murder of protesters at the Ittihadiya Presidential Palace in December 2012, Ahram Online reported.

During the trial, the defendants turned their backs to the judges and raised their hands in the air to make a "Rabaa" sign -- four fingers held up symbolizing the violent police crackdown on pro-Morsi protesters in August.

This was Morsi's third court appearance in which he refused to acknowledge the authority of the court.

The court unsealed evidence in the case, mostly videotapes and pictures of the clashes, during which Morsi supporters attacked a group of opposition protesters holding a sit-in against a constitutional declaration issued by Morsi granting himself more powers. Nine people were killed during the clashes.
