Germany pushes Afghanistan to sign security deal with U.S.

KABUL, Afghanistan, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Germany's defense minister called on Afghanistan Saturday to sign a bilateral security agreement with the United States.

Ursula von der Leyen's comments were made during a meeting at the 50th security conference in Munich, Khaama Press reported.

She said Germany is committed to providing equipment and training to the Afghan national security force, but urged Afghan President Hamid Karzai to sign the agreement with the United States.

Following von der Leyen's comments, the Afghan presidential palace issued a statement saying Karzai discussed the Afghan-U.S. bilateral security agreement with British Prime Minister David Cameron via phone.
