Rat-infested 'ghost ship' may be drifting toward U.K.

LONDON, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- Britain's Maritime and Coastguard Agency is trying to solve the mystery of a deserted, rat-infested Russian cruise ship that has not been seen in a year.

The 300-foot Lyubov Orlova, named after a 1930s Russian actress, broke free from a tug boat off the coast of Canada last spring and drifted eastward into the Atlantic Ocean, ITV reported.

No crew was aboard the vessel, which had been scheduled to be broken apart in the Dominican Republic for scrap.

U.K. maritime authorities believe winter storms are pushing the adrift Soviet-era ship towards England, Ireland or Scotland.

"We have received no reported sightings of the vessel since April of last year, but we will respond accordingly," a spokesman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency told the BBC.

ITV said the ghost ship is worth about $100,000 to salvage hunters as scrap.
