One dead, seven missing as immigrants' boat capsizes near Turkey

KUSADASI, Turkey, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- At least one person died and seven were missing after a boat carrying immigrants capsized near the resort town of Kusadasi, Turkey, officials said Friday.

The Turkish Coast Guard rescued 11 others aboard the boat, the Istanbul newspaper Today's Zaman reported.

Erol Ayyildiz, governor of Aydin Province, which includes the resort town on the Aegean Sea, said in a statement adverse weather conditions may have caused the capsizing. He added a helicopter and four rescue boats remain in use in searching for the missing victims.

Ayyildiz said the nationality of the immigrants had not yet been determined.
